Bobiverse
Book Recommendation: Bobiverse
The “Bobiverse” books, beginning with “We are Legion,” is a really fun series. I’ll describe it very briefly, but I don’t want to get into spoilers, so forgive the short post.
Essentially, Bob is a software developer who just sold his company for a ton of money when he is hit by a car and killed. Luckily, one of the last things he did was sign up with a cryogenics company who would freeze his head until technology advanced far enough to repair or cure his cause of death.
Flash forward 117 years. Bob finds himself “awake” as essentially an AI in a computer. Turns out, the government has declared him dead, siezed all his assets, and he, such as he is, is now property.
He is one of five people revived to compete for a single assignment. Those not selected will be deactivated. The fittest candidate will be piloting earth’s first interstellar craft to find habitable planets for colonization.
However, other nations are working towards the same goal, with tensions among the countries bringing the world to the brink of war. Can Bob survive not only the selection process, but the belligerant spacecraft being launched by foreign enemies as well?
If successful, Bob’s prime directives are to both find suitable worlds and make copies of himself to continue the search in distant solar systems. How would you get along with copies of yourself, while dealing with the unprecedented challenges of living in a box with no physical form, for years, decades, or even centuries on end?
